I can understand if they want to shut down some old servers checking DLC licenses, if these games (or their DLCs) don't sell anymore.
But the better way to do that would be unlocking all singleplayer DLC content in the main game with a final patch; integrating the optional stuff in the main game. Instead of taking away this content from the people who bought it, gift these contents to people who only have the base game.
The same for whole games they don't want to check the licenses anymore (AC Liberation HD, Anno 2070): offer them for free, if you don't want to sell these games anymore.
Much much better PR with negligible costs for them.
