I use Logic, Cubase and Studio One, but those aren't free and doesn't matter. Any of them are good to jump in and start getting your feet wet. The ones you pay for just have more features.

You can get by with just a mouse and keyboard but it can get tedious.  I would recommend getting something small like this at first to see if it's something you are really interested in or if its just a passing phase.  This is a MIDI controller, it is basically a mouse and keyboard that looks like a musical instrument.  It makes no sounds, has no speakers, it just allows you to interact with the sound libraries that are included with most DAWs.  Don't let its size fool you either, it is not a toy.  It is professional grade.  You can probably find one of these used at a Pawn shop or garage sale for a lot less money.  A good set of headphones or monitors I would also recommend.
