Back in time when the NES was around they demanded that 3rd party publishers only release their games on the NES in the US which completely ruined the market for their competition.
This kind of unhealthy exclusivity was basically the same Xbox is trying to do now by buying all these big publishers, so Microsoft is most probably becoming the next 80s-Nintendo in the future.

But MS is not trying to lock their games behind their console.  I actually believe if Sony and Nintendo would allow GP on their consoles, MS would release PS and Nintendo version of those games or allow streaming via cloud without any reservations.  MS want to be the distributor of content, they actually do not care what hardware you play it on as long as you sub to GP.
