One theory I have heard that sounds somewhat plausible is that PlayStation and Xbox could see greater than expected lifetime sales because some anticipate this generation lasting much longer than previous generations. Even before touching on supply chain issues, the cost of silicon has been going way up over the last 5-10 years as node shrinks have become more and more expensive to implement. The next console generation will likely be on 3nm and 2nm, which is right at the limit of what is possible with silicon with current understandings of computing. Those chips will be cost prohibitive for some time and it’s possible the manufacturers just decide to wait and extend this generation for as long as possible. 9th gen going 10 years before a new console is introduced is not outlandish to me
