Literally all the specials and the music are new. It only looks like Splatoon 2 if you haven't played Splatoon 2. I've also noticed some new outfits and haircuts.

Edit: Also the sqawn points work completely different.

I played Splatoon 2 and think 3 looks just like it. Like obviously it has its differences, like the ones you pointed out, but it still seems like the same "base" game, same engine, same physics, same movement, and probably a lot of the same weapons, stages and assets in general. Maybe about as big a difference as between 1 and 2, which was passable back then because of the short time between them, now it's just... Feels like the series is stagnant already, and reluctant to take a step forward in any meaningful way. Feels like Nintendo's Call of Duty really.

I don't think that's a fair assessment at all. CoD is an annual game where new iterations just get mass produced on an annual schedule. This isn't Splatoon 8 coming out! And I mean it's on the same system as the last one, so obviously it's gonna look similar, not gonna have massive graphical upgrades, and is going to be the same art style because that is the style of the series.

The question is, what is the new content and what interesting new things does the game do. Weapons, modes, maps, single player campaign, moves, etc. If there's not a bunch of new interesting content in those areas then yeah it will seem like something that could have just been a DLC on Splatoon 2. But if there's a ton of new content then nothing wrong with a new game coming out 5 years later.
