Mario 64 was the game that changed the industry. It showed how to do 3D right. It literally blew people away with its 3D movement controls which still stand the test of time. Zelda and Metroid Prime are better 3D games however that's because they weren't out the door first and came later on after Mario 64 set the standard. Ill never forget the first time playing it.
