PS5 vs Xbox Series X|S vs Switch Launch Sales Comparison Through Week 60

T

PS5 Vs. Xbox Series X|S Vs. Switch US:

  1. PS5: 6,122,408
  2. Switch: 5,830,069
  3. XSX|S: 5,546,566

Through the first 60 weeks available in the US the PlayStation 5 is ahead of the Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X|S. The PS5 is ahead of the Switch by 0.29 million units and is 0.58 million units ahead of the Xbox Series X|S. The Switch is ahead of the Xbox Series X|S by 0.28 million units.

The PS5 has sold 6.12 million in 60 weeks in the US, while the Switch sold 5.83 million units and the Xbox Series X|S 5.55 million units.

Looking at the marketshare through 60 weeks, the Switch currently leads. The PS5 has a 35.0 percent marketshare, the Switch sits at 33.3 percent, and the Xbox Series X|S at 31.7 percent.

I feel like this is the contest to watch for the immediate future.  X|S clearly narrowed the gap between it and PS5 in the US.  Given the chip shortage, I think it is likely this trend will continue and X|S will surpass the PS5 in the US.

I think it’s an intentional and wise strategy on the part of Microsoft for the short to medium term. There are literally tens of millions of former Xbox players North America that switched to other platforms over the last 8 years, and a large portion of them could be won back, perhaps permanently.

if they can regain the market share lead over PS in NA then Xbox will probably have secured a more or less permanent seat at the table in the hardware business. Trying to regain ground in the rest of the world for 10th gen will be a lot easier if they aren’t having to play catch-up on their home turf
