I think it is matter of "it's good enough" approach. OQ2's hadrware is good enough. It's SoC is good enough for decent visuals, it's tracking is good enough (better than PSVR actually form my experience) and it's resolution and FoV are good enough. Add to that $300 price tag and it becomes "a great buy". So, if Nintendo, for example, decided to jump into VR, they have real world example of how it's done with "good enough" approach, which matches their usual approach to making hardware. |
I would love a Nintendo headset. Botw2 in VR would be amazing.
Problem with good enough is, that it's not good enough for the hardcore gamers. It's always the first complaint, doesn't look good, too many sacrifices in visuals, next to short games. I bet a lot of Quest2 users use it to stream from PC. Anyway you see the complaints all the time about the weak Switch hardware and how Steamdeck is going to be better. (doubt it, but it does have more grunt)
But love the $10 million sales figure. VR is not a fad, just a slow burner, starting to pick up speed. 3D tvs bit the dust, Kinect is done, Voice control forgotten, Motion controls are back to occasional use, yet VR is still growing. |
I'm actually more thrilled by the idea of classic Zelda done from the perspective of something like Moss. While I like to play games from first person perspective in VR, it's way more comfortable (and allows for longer sessions) with 3rd person perspective diorama approach (like in Moss) - and classic 2D Zelda would be perfect fit for that. That along with Mario game, Mario Kart VR and something like VR Sports Resort would probably kill it again with both core and casual audience.
As for good enough, as I said, Nintendo has that "good enough" approach for quite some time now - IMO, if they make something like small cube with good enough SoC inside of it that you can "switch" between VR headset accessory, handheld tablet accessory or TV dock accessory, it could be a gigantic hit far surpassing Switch.
