You read that right: Chrono Trigger is a terrible looking game.

You have this fantastic story with the end of the world looming overhead the entire time yet you have this bright vivd colors and beautiful vegitation.  What the hell?  The main object of this thread is to show Square Enix that we do not want a bright and lovable Chrono Trigger, but a Chrono Trigger with the art style it deserves.

In my opinion, this is what we should get with a Chrono Trigger game:

  • Goth and obscure scenarios, cryptic, dark and shadowy dungeons
  • Graphically realistic world with realistic, dirty and muddy textures
  • A macabre, dark and realistic art style

This is what we got right now:

  • Cartoon'ish art direction, obviously influenced by Final Fantasty IV and VI, Chrono Trigger isn't Final Fantasy
  • Hand made sprites with bright colors
  • Outside scenarios with vivid colors, beautiful forest with colorful vegetation, shiny and beautiful waterfuls where even rainbows take place.
  • Blocky, cartoon'ish graphic elements like big, over-sized fire braziers in dungeons, over-sized cartoon'ish scenario decorations like smiling statues.

What we want:

  • A darker, gothic, cryptic and creepier environment.
  • A more realistic artistic direction, more independant from the Final Fantasy art direction.
  • Darker dungeons without a blue/green environment,  Lavos is dark and shadowy.
  • Slightly less colorful and less outside scenarios, they are too heavily influenced by the Final Fantasy ones.
  • Darker and less colorful landscapes.  Here is how Chrono Trigger should look:

What we ask Square Enix is to find a way of pleasing the fans of the Chrono Trigger universe by giving us a true version of Chrono Trigger on the Nintendo DS that is graphically coherent with the Chrono Trigger universe it belongs to.
