I can't decide if I should watch the trilogy beforehand or go into Rez with an era of mystery.

I have no idea. It might end up being a film that fans of the original trilogy aren't too fond of while newcomers enjoy it more. So not really a right answer here lol.

I do love the Matrix films though, and despite a lot of people not liking reloaded/revolutions I like all three. Though the third one especially definitely has it's problems.
