A challenging 'easy to play hard to master' difficulty curve, really interesting track designs, lots of different race types, strong visuals, incredibly fast-paced racing, and famously strong soundtracks. Combat is also a surprisingly difficult thing to pull off in a racing game but WipEout always managed to balance it well; there were lots of different weapon types and defensive options, and you had to be really careful to maintain your shields against enemy fire and bashing into the track walls, weighing up whether to enter the futuristic pit stop to recharge and lose time or to risk complete destruction. The original ones also had an almost subversive feel to them, from the advertising campaigns to the menus and announcer - they were a strange mix of utopia and dystopia that created a very unique futuristic vibe. |
