Close call between DS and 8 Deluxe. And not just because those are the games with the most content. Mario Kart DS' mission mode is something the series should have brought back, and the game was a true phenomenon back in 2005. In some ways it overshadowed the upcoming launch of the 7th generation. It was the biggest handheld game of the decade. Plus its retro tracks and online features became standard.

8 had the bad battle mode on the Wii U, but the addition of the DLC content, 200 CC and the better battle mode on Switch brings it up. Despite its sales I don't think it has the impact the DS or Wii games did.

Wii would be in contention if it had better balancing. The tracks were great and it's a ton of fun. There's a reason it's still got a dedicated playerbase. But 150 CC is a nightmare.
