Misogyny, Bigotry, homophobia and so forth is a systemic issue world-wide and it's prevalence has grown partly due to many conservative/right-wing governments coming to power (with heavy religious influences) with various changes in policy.
I.E. Trump in the USA, SCOMO in Australia, UK with Brexit... It's only in the last few years where there seems to be a 180' on many of those issues... It's just taking awhile for some governments/business/organizations to catch up on the change.
