Well... I'll put it this way.
Lag prevents the use of complete skill. It denies the perfect control anyone going for tournament standard strives for. Due to this, varying amounts of lag will effect players in different ways. This could lead to the #1 spot going to someone who may in fact, be 3 stockable by #20 offline every single time. Certain strategies are exploitable online that no one but an idiot would dare attempt offline.
The ONLY way I can think of that would eliminate this entirely (aside from making it offline) is for every single player to play against everyone. To make it more fair, apply some kind of point system to account somewhat for flukes. The true winner, then should be #1.
That basically means a Round Robin tournament. However, with the sheer amount of people that play here, a tournament like this could span for days. It would literally require hundreds of matches to be played. Then theres the obvious fact that online, without concrete proof, people could easily lie about the outcome of the match.
A challenger rankings 'could' work, but I believe it might end up being horribly skewed due to the online mechanics of brawl.
The problem with teams. How would partners work? If we had a list from singles everyone would probably want the top players from that as their team mate...
