Most people already have things they can use to try out things before having to spend money on this. For example, most people have fingers, and you can probably get a good idea just with them. I've read hollow glass objects can be quite risky though because, uh, they can break and it'll be a huge mess and pain (literally) when that happens, so have some common sense as well. Still, if you're interested in trying, you probably have something usable already.
