Whatever it is, why couldn't they sell it on its own on the Switch for a reasonable price, so that those who already played 3D World don't have to repurchase that if they don't find the changes to the main game worth it?

Because they've set no precedent of doing so with their main IP's.

And yes, I know there's Xenoblade 2 Torna and Captain Toad but these are not amongst their most prolific IP's.

Now, do I disagree with what your suggesting ? No, but it arguably doesn't make sense from Nintendo's POV.

I perfectly understand why Nintendo would do this. It's pro-profit and anti-consumer. Since I'm a consumer, and not a stockholder, I am annoyed. Not like I'm going to boycott Nintendo, but it's an anti-consumer practice, and complaining about it on an internet forum feels like a proportionate response.

Anyway... not going to respond to this issue anymore. I said what I feel, and don't want to be a drag for people who are excited. For those who haven't played 3D World, you're in for a treat. Personally, I enjoyed it more than Odyssey even in its Wii U form. I really hope hope Nintendo keeps the 3dland/world going as a kind of "third pillar" of the Mario platform franchise. Although, considering Mario Maker is also its sort of thing, that could lead to oversaturation.
