Not to point out the obvious and rain on some parades, but winning GotY has just as much to do with competition as it does with quality of the game itself. Point being TLoU 2 released in 2020, and the competition was light. 2020 was one of the weakest years in recent memory, at least in my opinion.

2017 on the other hand was outstanding, one of the greatest. Mario Odyssey, Nier Auotamata, Breath of the Wild, Persona 5, Divinity Original Sin 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, Cuphead, Nioh,

Oh yeah, I remember that excuse on 2013 too, TLoU won record breaking awards numbers because there was no competition, when the most successful videogame ever, GTAV, released that same year...

And considering 2020 had FF VIIR (Which for me have been the best FF title since IX perhaps), GoT (my favorite game of the gen), Yakuza 7 (it is fucking great even with new protagonist), Animal Crossing (that some people are saying should won all), Half Life Alyx (a new HL after many years) is almost like having no competition right?
