I just played it some on my lunch break.  Turns out I am terrible at wall riding the Thwomps.  I did collect one of the big coins and got to the 2nd room, but only by stacking the crates and POW blocks alongside the left ledge to get up there without actually using the Thwomps.

Oh nice! I didn't think of that. I actually added those last minute for aestheics and I'm usually good at weeding out the cheese. Apparently not. I'll give yours a shot right after I eat.
