The race to vaccinate is on

Herd immunity threshold is back at 70%, was it always that high or new estimate based on the more virulent strains. It doesn't say.

So far Israel leads with 17% of the population having received a first dose.

As of the start of 2021, 4.8 million people in China have been vaccinated, and 800,000 in Russia, according to official figures compiled by AFP.

Britain was the first western nation to initiate a vaccination programme, with nearly a million people having received a first jab by the end of 2020. Rollout in the rest of Europe has been uneven, with more than 300,000 vaccinated in Germany, 140,000 in Spain, 92,000 in Poland, and 52,000 in Denmark, but only a few hundred in France and Belgium as of January 1.

So far, some 15 million people worldwide have been vaccinated. The global population is 7.8 billion.

Thus 5.46 billion people need to be vaccinated to get rid of it with nearly 11 billion doses. We're at 0.015 billion doses atm.



Meanwhile, field hospitals are starting to get used here

So far to move recovering Covid-19 patients out of the hospital to make room for regular surgeries. However some places already have started cancelling surgeries.

“Right now and the next months are going to be really difficult in Canada,” said Dr. Theresa Tam, Chief Public Health Officer of Canada, said Tuesday. “So reducing any risks of importation and escalation of the epidemic, or pandemic, in Canada is really important.”


And surprise, surprise (not) schools will stay closed next week.
