in the US if you shoot someone in anyway other then killing them in self defence they can sue you for assault with a deadly weapon meaning that his intention of doing the right thing would have landed him in jail with a massive lawsuit from the real criminals against him.
But I disagree, he did a nobel thing. If you dont like the fact that people like him actually did something right then its your problem but frankly i know if someone was trying to steal from someone living around you that you would feel guilty as hell that you did not stop them if you knew it was happening and the police were not goinig to be able to stop them in time.
