Is there a relationship? I'd say it's non-existent. I guess they do congratulate each other on product launches but that's about it.
Microsoft and Nintendo have a friendly but still restrained relationship.
Japan gave up on dedicated home consoles a long time ago, even the Wii did not sell all that great there it got outsold by the PSP.
There's only 4 home console (only) systems in Japan as far as I know that have sold 15+ million in Japan ... Famicom, Super Famicom, Playstation 1, Playstation 2, and that's it. PS2 being the last one that launched 20 years ago.
