Well, the criticism started with the state of base PS4 and XOne versions of the game. And the way CDPR hid those versions as long as possible. Which is in my opinion a valid criticism. But trashing other versions of the game is definitely an exaggeration. While there are bugs and dips, it is nothing we haven't seen before from western developers in big, loved games like Skyrim and Witcher 3.

First gameplay reveal was in 2018. The mid-gen upgrades for PS4 and Xbox One were both out by then, and the gameplay shown was far and away some of the most technically demanding we'd ever seen. This was always a game being targeted at high-end hardware, mainly PC, and there was no good reason to even expect a current-gen release. Anyone that took that risk with base systems, at least gets a free next-gen upgrade.

The game play isn't technically demanding at all, the graphics are.

The game wasn't always targeted at high-end hardware, or CDPR flat out lied about it. They specifically stated it was for PS4 and XBox One. That's the reason why people expected it for current gen consoles.

"The current console generation is what we're aiming for. We are aiming for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and of course PC as well," Mills told GameInformer.

It's the deceptive PR and hiding the truth as long as possible is what they get the backlash from currently. That and all the other promises, like most advanced open world AI etc which has all been scrapped to get the game out of the door.

What is there is a good RPG like the Witcher 3 that takes place on a large map. Can't really call it open world since there hardly is any open world game play. There's nothing wrong with that as long as you follow the script, yet they led people to believe there would be a living city not much unlike Rockstar outings.

Then there are all the bugs, glitches, crashes etc. It works for plenty people, it also doesn't work at all for a lot of people, and the performance on base consoles, resolution and fps are shameful.

The game was supposed to come out well before PS5 and XSX, and it doesn't even run that well on the mid-gen refreshes that are far in minority.

"At least you get a free next-gen upgrade" is a poor excuse. Just assuming everyone is going to upgrade to the same console, or can you run a ps4 copy on series x or PC?
