You can't just do whatever you want with a company's intellectual property, if they let it slide just once they'd be opening the floodgates.

It's hard to argue against them when Nintendo shut down something that was gonna support a charity AND stopped people from playing Melee tournaments online.

It may not have been great PR but they were completely within their rights to stop people taking liberties with their property.
