I closed thousands of PC games the last decades with Alt + F4 and never had a problem with that.

Don't do it when a game is auto-saving (so wait a few seconds in auto-save games when finishing a quest/level or entering a new area). Other than that, you're fine... even when the HDD / SSD is loading data.
