Yes they are losing money but, its is basically all hardware. Their losses aren't as substancial now, which can be attributed to as you said lower hardware prices. They did lose billions in their first two launch years but that was when they lost over 500 dollars a system. There were actually predictions that their quaterly charts could begin to see the black by the end of the year (not overall but for each quater) , I'm looking for the article now.
