Well, both games released on this financial year, and yet they are still posting a loss for the financial year on HD games. If FF7R hadn't been timed exclusive to PS4 for one year, perhaps the Xbox and PC versions would have sold well enough to offset the poor sales of Avengers. But then we don't know how well Sony compensated Square Enix for that 1 year timed exclusivity either, maybe they paid them enough for it that the extra Xbox and PC sales wouldn't have offset the poor Avengers sales. As for the PS exclusive Spider-Man DLC for Avengers, it's possible that some Xbox and PC gamers boycotted Avengers over the decision to lock Spider-Man to PS4/PS5.

This loss is not for the financial year. But for the financial quarter (2nd quarter). FFVII released last quarter, so even if it wasn't timed exclusive, the majority of the extra sales would have been counted for the last quarter because FF games are very front loaded. And as you said, we don't how much Sony paid for the exclusivity.

Still pretty bad results all together if you ask me. Only 1 decent quarter and pretty much a net zero result over 18 months. Square Enix is better of making mobile games it seems.
