I think you're underestimating the value Bethesda has. Skyrim sold 10's of millions of copies. If it convinces 10 million people to sign up for Gamepass, they could be looking at $100 million a month. That's 1.2 billion every year. That's before they've sold any games. It'll take a few years to make back the investment, but considering BGS's size, they will almost certainly make it back. You also seem to be underestimating how many people would switch over/ buy a second console. Huge numbers of people don't care about platforms. They only care about playing CoD, GTA with their friends. I don't know. I see 3 ways this could all go down. 1.) Treat Bethesda as if it was still mostly third party. In this case, MS benefits from game sales on other platforms and they benefit from Zenimax being on Gamepass which is still a huge benefit. This option also pisses off the fewest number of people. But it is almost certainly the least profitable. 2.) Use Zenimax as an in to get Gamepass on other platforms. Basically "We will give you TES VI if you also take Gamepass.". This is pretty consistent with what Phil has been talking about. And it'd be huge for MS to get Gamepass on PS. 3.) Go fully exclusive. Use TES VI to make people buy a PC, Xbox, Gamepass. Force them to have to buy their platform to experience their favorite WRPG or shooters. |
I've probably spend over 300 hours playing Skyrim. Wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy games like that instead of paying a monthly fee?
