How does it benefit Xbox consumers? These games already would have been on Xbox. I can fathom a few fairly minor benefits to Xbox customers like as others have mentioned, the potential of these games being on Game Pass sooner, but overall, the primary effect of this acquisition is that Xbox customers get the same thing they've always gotten and Playstation/Nintendo customers get something worse. I am all for competition, but not like this. I would wholeheartedly support MS dumping cash into developing a new studio or pouring money into new talent but this seems like subtractive spending, not additive spending. 

Again, this is under the assumption that Xbox will shift these games towards exclusivity which we don't know yet, but it seems strange to spend this much money on a brand and then not utilize it to produce exclusives...

Think of this as more of  gamepass move then a console exclusive move.  The purpose is for content and MS needs a stable of high profile content on the service to make it viable.  Dumping cash into an unproven studio with unproven game is way more risky then getting established studios.  Also I believe MS just send a broadside shot telling the industry that they are serious and the cash straps are off.  This may give MS better leverage in other deals as they show they are willing to open the pocket books.  MS has moved to a service oriented company.  This move fits right into where they are going and probably has nothing to do with Sony or competing on the console front but instead setting up a huge games service that will be available on just about every hardware they can put it on.
