My first HDTV from 2006 was Toshiba. It still works today. However, I'd say go with a Vizio, or something. From the sounds of it, you're just looking for a TV to be a TV, and doesn't have to be anything special. As others have been saying, use rtings to find what works for you. That's what I did. Turns out, the TV I wanted was 800 dollars, and I've been more than happy with it for the past 2 years. Even if I didn't want to spend the money on it initially, it's been everything I wanted.
