Hard work pays off. Being at the right place at the right time certainly helps... But showing initiative and doing the hard yard pays off.
However I "judge" success on how happy and content you are, you only get one life to live, so if you are loving life, then that is a success.
I personally would never change what I do for the world... The pay is shit. Your life is at risk. What more could you want?
