PS4 vs 360 in the US is a good example of how different sales trajectories impact things. When it was at the 49 week mark it would look to people who aren't knowledgeable about video game sales that the PS4 was gonna beat the 360 by a big margin but in the end it's gonna lose by a significant amount. Despite this there will still be people comparing the first year sales of the PS5 to the PS4 and the Series X/S to the Xbox One and making definitive statements about which will sell better or worse than their predecessors even though that can't be known for sure that early.
