Each to their own I guess. So far there has never been a console that I've considered even close to being worth getting at launch. We got the Switch for last Christmas as well, and I never felt the need to get it any earlier. 

Nintendo systems are the only systems I’ve ever bought at launch. Nintendo is usually (not always) good about bringing their A-game to launch. Even then I haven’t bought most of them at launch. Wii, Game Boy, and N64 were ones I did buy, and if life hadn’t been getting in the way at the time, I’d have dove into the Switch day one.
