That worked so well for the GDR (German Democratic Republic)...

To be honest it worked pretty well on the purpose of preventing people to go in or out. Like it or not, walls works.

People could get in, the problem was more to get out again, which was the actual purpose of the wall, despite it's official name (Antifaschistischer Schutzwall; Antifaschist Protection Wall). The GDR was bleeding talent left and right and had to find a way to stop all their citizens fleeing to the west. Since the blockade or West Berlin failed, the Soviet ran out of option to prevent the bleeding any other way than wall in their citizens.

More importantly, it was much more than just a wall. Behind it, it had guards with orders to shoot on sight, automatic firing guns, land mines, tripwires, barbed wires, small spikes to pierce your feet, and so on, anything to bog down any attempt to flee to the west. It was way more than just a wall (and it was actually 2 walls, an inner wall and an outer wall).

A wall alone is useless. It would have the same effect as the Chinese wall had on keeping the Huns out: none at all (for the record, the Huns entered China through a door that had not been closed correctly). Since the wall was so damn long, it was impossible to patrol or check every part of it, meaning it's defensive purpose was undermined by reality right from the start, and a border Wall between the US and Mexico would have he exact same problems.
