There was software emulation on the PS3. It came with 80GB Metal Gear Solid model - before it got removed with updates.

PS3 can be been hacked with homebrew installed to re enable it (not going to link that). It wasn't well known enough due to it being a limited run console. A non hardware based PS3 is capable of PS2 emulation.

Kinda shocking. I have that specific model PS3 and it played PS2 games until it broke in 2013, as far as I know. I still have it in the box in a closet!
