I agree that objectification of women is not as acceptable today as it was in times past.  But, that's not the same as sex.  Stuff is regularly shown on network TV today that would have been controversial on premium cable stations a couple decades ago.

In other words, I think you're conflating the issues.

Is it?  I'll cop to not watching much network TV anymore, but when I was growing up in the 90s, NYPD Blue was showing naked people in sexual situations rather frequently.  Side boob and butts weren't unheard of in several other shows.  Even a few full breast shots made it into TV movies and medical shows like ER.

By the time I stopped watching ten years ago, that sort of thing had more or less disappeared and edgy shows like WWE seriously toned down their content.

And it's really not just television.  I mean, nudity isn't gone from movies, but it feels like it's a lot less frequent.  I don't see nearly as many teen sex romps like Porky's or American Pie out these days.  Nudity seems more relegated to the R rating when it used to be in mainstream PG-13 movies more often (Titanic being an obvious example).  Other mediums like comics seem afraid to go there as often as they used to be.

Heck, even Playboy outright got out of the nudity business for awhile.

I had a theory awhile back that as the internet got ubiquitous and all the *ahem* adult content that came with it became easy to access, that nudity largely lost its appeal among consumers and the boost in ratings and ticket sales wasn't as strong as it used to be.  Not enough to overcome the squeamishness of advertisers anyway.

You make good points, and you have me second guessing.  I'll try to pay attention to this stuff for a while and reevaluate.
