Eh, we still need to wait to make that judgement.  The first 7 months haven't been that bad, even if they haven't been exciting.  Just two more solid (non-port) games and the year will be in the mediocre range.

Granted, they may not manage to clear that low bar.

They probably won't, honestly, but I think it's unfair to make criticisms about it. We've all been here, we all know this year was nothing like anything ever before. It's not reasonable to expect game development to have continued as normal, or at least that's my take on it.

For all I care, anything that ever had an announced release date (or timeframe) of 2020 or further, I just add one more year to it. If something I was anticipating comes out sooner than that one-year delay I'm assuming it'll have, it's a bonus and I can be happy with it, but I'm really not creating any expectations over that sort of thing.

Well I'm fairly confident at the very least Bravely Default II will be a 2020 release. They still advertised it as such and put out a demo for feedback, so I'm confident that should be ready. But I'm starting to think No More Heroes 3 may not make it.

On the Nintendo side, I still have to think they'll make sure they have at least one notable release for the holidays. The reason they're probably waiting to the last possible moment to show it, is because they likely still don't know just what they can feasibly push out in time. So they'll wait as long as they can before announcing anything.

While the long periods of silence are frustrating, and the bad timing of this Mini Direct didn't help, I'm still keeping in perspective that it's July and it's just been that kind of turbulent year for everything.
