If you want to play the originals, unless you really really WANT that feeling of being lost, I would say bring a map. Up until Super, the 2D games were still evolving drastically between iterations. A lot of series and genre staples didn't exist before Super. Super is where things really fell into place.
This thread reminds me that I do still need to play AM2R.
