This has been pretty much my approach as of late as well. Between GamePass, and some of my own backlog, I got a lot to keep me busy, and then I'll pick up certain games on sale when they're around half off or so. Next gen, with MS probably having a stronger first party output (I should hope), I expect that I'll be waiting for even more deep sales.
There are games from certain developers like CDPR, or Larian that I'm comfortable purchasing games for 70 bucks or more from, but those are few and far between.
