My issues with the game was the level design and the story falling apart near the end. I really miss the light RE elements 1, 3 and 4 had going on, made the world feel cohesive enough and give you breaks between fights that didn't felt like a chore.

Also presentation wise, is not as detailed or varied in terms of world design compared to 1 and 3. You spend a lot of time inside the tower thing or in a destroyed city, doesn't really hit a memorable note besides the area where you fight Urizen for the last time.

The story, while I get they wanted to close the whole, sons of Sparda arc for good, it wasn't very well executed, my thing with bringing him back as the main villain is that he got an arc already in 1 and 3, the final missions feel like fan service more than anything, added to that is the fact that his final battle here isn't as climatic as the one before or even as good as the final Urizen fight.

But at the end of it, it makes me hopeful that they can move on with just Nero or maybe a new protagonist after closing that arc.

Combat and character expression is superb tho, there are few action games that reach the level of depth and quality that DMC does at its best, superior than most of Platinum, bar maybe Wonderful 101. The insane level of options with Nero and Dante, all satisfying to execute and without needing to rely on quick time events and the like to ooze its style. It also has a mostly good cast of bosses and enemies to add to its quality.

Overall is in the better half of games with 1 and 3 for me, is a really great game, not as good as 3 and debatable with 1 but far above 2, the incomplete 4 and the mess that is DmC.
