The added footage highlights an added detail to battle as your permanent partner gives you added abilities like the summon like attack with the Turtle this ability is also seen in the other video where Mario summons a Water Dragon against a boss which happens to be a Phoenix. Seeing as you fight the Turtle before you gain it I'm guessing the Phoenix is also a summon ability when defeated, one of these summons is shown to be used outside of battle so the others might be used in such a manner as well also shown is the field skill Mario uses is also used in battle for certain attacks.
