Cos Nintendo went with cartridges in the N64.
It snowballed into third parties going to PS1, making it popular, and creating a virtuous cicle where playstation had the best third party games because it is popular and is popular because has the best games.

The PS1 was also significantly easier and cheaper to develop for and Sony's attitude towards third parties was light years ahead of Nintendo back then. That was just as relevant or more, if interviews with developers are anything to go by.

In fact I think the Switch might be the first Nintendo home console that third parties feel comfortable with, perhaps due to the well-known ARM-Maxwell-DDR4 architecture making it easy to port stuff to it.
