I agree that a large fan isn't the only possibility. They could probably get away with three 80mm fans on the back and sides of the system, designed for push-pull. But that would be more expensive than a single large 140mm fan like MS is using on XSX. For these companies, every extra dollar on the bill of materials adds up in the long term. I do think they are going to want to avoid making PS5 super noisy like PS4 Pro. It may not have hurt PS4 Pro sales, but I've spoken to several other PS4 Pro owners like myself who bought it without realizing just how noisy it would be, who say that they won't buy a base PS5 if it is noisy, and will wait on a quieter PS5 revision or PS5 Pro. And if they want it to be quiet, they're either going to need alot of small fans or 1 large fan. |
Cerny in his reveal said that they had done a poor job in estimating power usage in the past and talked about his own Pro's noise. their constant power, variable frequency strategy is part of overcoming thermal issues, the details of the cooling system itself will be revealed in a future teardown, but I expect a more progressive approach to cooling much like MS has done with the series x design rather than the usual larger fan and heatsink,
then again this is them showing off the PS4 cooling https://vrzone.com/articles/sony-engineer-unveils-functional-beauty-ps4s-cooling-system/69852.html
