In defense of Mario Odyssey. It's motion controls aren't waggle. There's a lot of nuanced and advanced movements you can do with simple, directional gestures. It works well once you get used to it. But I do agree that mindless waggle controls with no actual though or nuance are thankfully a thing of the past.
