Oh and I also believe npd held a survey where about 70% of the ps2 owners who participated said that they bought their ps2 at some point primarly to play dvds. ANyway the point is the ps2 was also a media player along with a gaming console, and was sold as such, and a considerable amount of those sales most likely were those who were interested in the media features.
