They already told us before the game came out that it be separate from the Compilation of Final Fantasy 7 and .. its not true. They made 3 references to it. Then we have the the ending statement that said " The journey to the unknown continues" . That was specifically requested by Kitase.

But the story is separated from the original compilation in that it's not the same arc.

The presence of the wider Avalanche group near the start is already showing the "timeline" is separate from the beginning as it invalidates the events of the Before Crisis mobile game.
