to be more precise "corona virus" is a family of viruses, this specific "species" is a relative of SARS and hence the virus is officially named SARS-CoV-2 (and the illness is covid-19) - only 7 corona virus species are known to infect humans, 4 of them "common cold"s, MERS, SARS and the new one

several good RNA matches were found in different animals of the region, not a 100% one, which was super unlikely from the start as this is an RNA virus, meaning their genome is relatively unstable and changing all the time (samples from different human patients don't give out 100% matches either)

the origin of this one is very likely to be bats, as they are known to host hundreds of different corona virus species, but the strains in them tend to be hyperaggressive as bats have extremely good immune systems - SARS-CoV-2 is not that aggressive, so researchers do suspect there was an intermediate host before it made the jump to humans
