I guess BotW2 is a pretty stupid decision too then. Prioritizing sequels to your biggest sellers over smaller/uncertain sellers is just terrible business sense.

BotW 2 makes perfect sense.  While BotW sales remain solid, they've tapered off to a much greater extent than Mario Kart 8.  Furthermore, they're reusing assets instead of making a full-blown new game.  It's more akin to Mario Galaxy 2.

Furthermore, and this is a big thing that I haven't seen anyone mention, by holding off on Mario Kart 9, Nintendo will have the opportunity to launch their next console with a brand-new Mario Kart.  Which is, if you think about it, the single perfect launch game for Nintendo.  It's their highest selling IP, it's their most evergreen title so it will continue to sell throughout the generation, and its popularity is broad across almost all ranges of gamers.

If Nintendo were to launch a Mario Kart game this year, it would sell great, but holding off until 2023 means the launch of their next console will be a guaranteed immediate success.

* Nintendo can still release Mario Kart 10 for next-gen if they released a Mario Kart 9 now.
* Mario Kart 9 can reused Mario Kart 8's assets.

Breath of the Wild is still selling fantastically, but even with good sales, Nintendo announced a sequel.

What you can do for one, you can do for the other.
