I've always found the net better to annoy the animals. The plastic hammers were a good addition in new leaf.

Yea those hammers were a good addition.  I didn't use much in town but I loved that hammer mini game where you tried to whack that car as much as possible.  Key was getting in front of it so you could get least 2-4 good smacks in till it pushed you to the side.  Then when it falls over start nailing it like crazy.
