It’s about having ‘mindless’ fun. Call of Duty offers this, a complicated game like Metroid doesn’t. That’s a different kind of fun. With CoD you can just shoot at stuff for half an hour and see a bunch of explosions, and think nothing of it. And that’s in the end what most people want.

Yes, and I'm pretty sure those were also a lot more popular than Metroid (at least relative to the market at the time) because of that, which is the point.
