Don't forget that Trump was a democrat for a long time.  People like them (Bloomberg and Trump) waft in the political wind that that curries to their favor the most.  Why else run for NYC mayor 3 times as a Republican?

Back then the parties weren't exactly what they are now. That doesn't say a lot. The twilight of the DIxiecrats and the Rockfeller Republicans is a relatively new phenomenon. Post-Obama election, even.
